She saw a flash of metal, and cold blood sprayed across her face. Cade staggered back, clutching his arm. Red seeped between his fingers. He threw back his head and roared.

“Aveon, you bastard!”

From the shadows Aveon laughed quietly. His eyes sparkled like blue stars. He raised his dripping sword and pointed it at Luna.

“Catch me if you can,” he said, before sprinting into the darkness.

From my current WIP

Don’t swallow. He forced himself to let go and spit the mouthful into the bowl he’d used to carry the first aid supplies. His whole body shook with the strain of controlling himself. Over and over he repeated the process. Latch, suck, spit. And then the taste changed, it got deeper, complex. A flavor that was both sweet and savory. Earth and magic and thunderstorms. Her taste, unmuted by revenant poison.

He tried not to, but… A mouthful of her blood slid down his throat and pooled in his belly.

That time again. I’m really enjoying these, searching through my work for the snippet I want to use, reading the comments. Fun.

Excerpt from Lunacy and the Vampire.

My  main characters, Luna and Aveon, didn’t really hit it off to start with.

“Arms up, leech, against the wall,” she said.

He did as she directed, raising them above his head and laying his hands against the bricks. She steeled herself, pulled a wall of detachment around her heart and, quick as lightning, stabbed out. He howled when the knife sliced through his wrist and into the mortar, pinning him to the wall. The sound ripped at her insides. She pulled a second blade from a leg sheath.

“Please don’t.” She drove it through the other wrist anyway. Crimson bloomed around the blade and ran in rivers down his arms.

This is an excerpt from my novel Lunacy and the Vampire, published by Evernight Publishing.

Bring it on, Leech. As soon as the thought entered her head he sprang. He moved so fast his body blurred. She darted to the left, but not fast enough. His ice cold hand snagged her waist, and she felt herself being tossed through the air. She heard, rather than saw the door slam shut and twisted her body up from her prone position. In an instant he was on her, shoving her back down onto the bed. One hand fisted her dreads painfully, dragging her head back and to the side as he straddled her hips, using his weight and his other hand on her jaw to hold her in place.

Weekend Warriors 3

SJ Maylee on how it began

I’d like to thank SJ Maylee for being my first debut author and for our chat messages that have encouraged me and given me someone to talk to who understands the in’s and outs of being an author.

SJ has shared with us her journey to publication. She is the first, hopefully not the last.

So thank you and very welcome SJ,

Thank you, Evie for having me here today. I’d like to share with you my journey to publication. It’s a long and tumbling story. From a young age, reading was an escape for me. For as long as I can remember, I’ve had characters in my head and I played around with their stories. Insecurities got in my way and kept me from writing any of it down. A couple years ago, the drive to know my characters and finish their stories became such a bright light that I had no choice but give it a try.

Once I started, I devoured everything I could find on the craft of writing. I’ve never been so hungry for knowledge. Yes, I wanted to write, but I didn’t know anything about how to do it other than what I’d picked up by reading hundreds of books. Fortunately, reading is one of the best teachers. Without knowing it, I’ve been studying the craft all my life. However, this journey is a marathon and not a sprint. Nothing was going to happen overnight. I had to decide for myself over and over again to keep moving forward.

It’s a daunting task to sit and write and the zillion other things that go along with it. Discipline has been my friend and I’m still working on honing my focus and routine. My determination has been my best friend. I haven’t taken a day off of this journey since I started. Besides hard work it does take a certain amount of good luck, good timing, and guts.

Hitting send on a submission is one of the scariest things I’ve ever done. After spending countless hours with a story you care a lot about it and the waiting is the worst. I’ll never forget the day I received my acceptance from Evernight Publishing for TAKING CHANCES. I’ve read that email so many times. I still look at it often. I love that email. It tells my insecurities to be quiet. It’s helping me right now while I wait to hear on what I hope will be my second published story.

I love that I titled my debut TAKING CHANCES, because that’s what I did from day one. I took a chance.

Below I’m sharing a bit about my debut. You’ll find all the details, the blurb, an excerpt, links to where you can buy Taking Chances, a little bit about me, and all the places you can connect with me.

Thank you so much for having me today, Evie.

TAKING CHANCES EXCERPT:

Look at me, Lydia.”

He pushed her. “Why?” She shifted her gaze and hit him with her direct stare.

Thank you. I needed to see your eyes.” He reached out and swiped a lock of hair from her face. He tucked the strand behind her ear, and let his finger drag down her face to her shoulder. All the while his gaze captured hers, not letting go. “How are you this morning?”

I’m okay.”

Okay? Hmm, maybe I should do something to improve your mood? What would you say to that?”

Here?” she gasped and quickly turned to look out the door.

He grabbed hold of her shoulders, lifting her slightly off the floor.

Yes, here.” He brought their bodies together, claimed her lips and swept his tongue through her mouth, awakening her sexual hunger.

She felt wanted. She felt claimed. Images from the night before swam in her mind. Silly challenges from the office mean girl were all forgotten. He set her down and nipped at her lower lip.

We have a lot to do today. Unfortunately we cannot go any further, now.” He stepped back behind his desk as casually as if he’d just greeted the mail man.

But you would want to?” Still looking at the papers on his desk, she didn’t think he heard her. She took a step closer. “You would repeat last night?”

Her words stopped him. His gaze searched her face. Placing his hands on the desk he leaned forward and said, “Lydia, I fully intend to further explore your body and mind. After all, there are a few places I haven’t yet completely inspected.”

Her mind ran through what he had done to her last night, and there was only one place she could think of. Warmth fluttered through her face.

Now, that is a beautiful sight.” He returned to his papers. “I’m going to have to keep thinking of ways to shock you simply to see you blush again.” With the papers properly sorted, his attention returned to her. “Is Gina a problem?”

Gina was a lot of things, but she’d never thought of her as a problem. “I don’t think so.”

Don’t be afraid to put her in her place. She likes that more than she lets on. She’s the type to push so she can be pushed back.”

I hadn’t thought of her that way. Interesting.”

Let me know if she becomes a problem.” His gaze drilled into hers, not letting her escape.

Okay.”

Okay?” His posture remained controlled, but the smirk couldn’t be missed.

She added her own version of the devilish grin, which ignited another blush before she even spoke. “Okay, Sir.”

Trouble.” He stalked towards her and ruthlessly swept his hand under the hem of her skirt to press firmly along her panties. His lips pressed to her ear. “Hot and damp.”

The palm of his hand pressed on her clit, and he bent his knuckles, sending the tips of his fingers past the edge of her panties to drag along her slit.

Be careful what you say to me, sweetheart, or you’ll shatter my control.” With one last drag of his fingers, he pulled away and walked from the room.

S.J. MAYLEE BIO:

S. J. Maylee fell in love with storytelling at a young age and with it came a deep-seated desire for everyone to find their happily ever after. She’s finding the happy endings for her characters one steamy story at a time.

When she’s not reading or writing, you can find her caring for her garden, laughing with her two young sons, or dancing to her husband’s music. She’s a PMP (Project Management Professional), Nia instructor, and coffee addict.

As a writer she has a tendency to break hearts, but she always glues them back together.

Weekend Warriors

Welcome to my first installment of Weekend Warriors eight sentence teaser.

 www.wewriwa.com

This is from my current WIP, the 2nd book of the Dominion.

I don’t want this,” she said, appalled at how fragile her voice sounded. What the hell had just happened?

That predatory smile played across his face. “Baby, I may have been the lips, but you were tongue.”

Parry shrieked and flew at him, swinging a punch. He ducked and grasped her wrist, his fingers digging through her leather cuffs into her skin. He spun her and slammed her back against the building. Once again she was pinned in place by his huge frame.

Excerpt

Evernight Publishing has announced that Lunacy and the Vampire will be released on the 7th of Sept, 2012.
In honour of the occasion I have decided to post a teaser for your pleasure. Hope you enjoy.

Her ears twitched. A sound. So subtle she barely heard it. A dark blur slammed into Cade, driving him off her.

For a moment Luna sat, stunned and gaping after him.

“You okay?” she asked Cade finally. The big vampire was grinning. The blood running down his arm had already slowed. His wound was beginning close.

“Hell yeah,” he said. “Go get the little shit. Make him bleed for me.”

“Will do,” she said, leaping to her feet and taking off after Aveon. As she ran she considered what had happened. Why hadn’t Aveon allowed Cade to take her out of the game? It didn’t make sense unless he wanted to face her himself. Or had he simply been protecting her?

As she paced through the labyrinth she kept low to the ground, scanning her surroundings for any trace of him. She found none. She was moving slowly and silently now, her sword drawn and her senses straining. Her neck prickled. He was close, maybe watching her. She peered into the shadows. Nothing, where was he?

“Luna,” his voice was a whisper of sound. She spun on her heel. He emerged from the darkness, his eyes burning with intent. His hands empty of weapons. Luna raised her blade towards him. He barely gave it a glance.

“You won’t use that on me,” he said. He looked more than a little savage as he advanced on her.

“Don’t count on it,” she said, eying him nervously. “We’re still enemies.”

“We’re many things, Luna, but not that.” He stepped toward her, laying his hand on the flat of her blade and pushing it away. Why didn’t she use the moment to slice his palm, take the advantage?

Do it, Luna!

The sword tip scraped the gravel. With another step he had her backed to the wall. Inches separated them.

“This feels familiar,” he said ruefully.

“I believe it was you against the wall last time,” she said.

“And now the tables have turned. Shall I show you as much mercy as you showed me?” he said. Luna shivered as a chill that had nothing to do with cold ran down her spine.

Without warning Aveon grasped her wrist in a killing grip. Her sword clattered to the ground. He grabbed her other wrist and pinned her hands above her head, easing his body against hers. So savage and yet so gentle. Luna gasped, and Aveon smiled. His fangs glinted between his parted lips.

Vampire, Luna. Vampire.

But the closeness was a cool brand against her body. Her heart thudded loudly in her chest. She knew he could hear it. His eyes were fixed on the pulse point of her neck. His avid gaze burned.

He wants my blood.

“Let go of me.” Luna bucked to free herself. His grip hardened, and her struggles only increased the contact between them.

“Why would I do that?” he asked.

“Because if you don’t I’ll make you regret it,” she said.

“There’s nothing you could do that would make me regret this.” He leaned forward and ran cold lips down her throat. Fear and lust leaped to life within her. Shivering with pleasure and surprise, she had to fight the urge to throw her head back. Good, it felt too good, and it had been so long.

She’d had lovers in the past, plenty of them. She was nearly a thousand years old after all. In her early years she had experimented as much as the next immortal, but after the first five hundred years or so it had just gotten, well, boring. Without an emotional connection it had become an itch that was less complicated to scratch on her own. And the specter of her father hung over any developing relationship. How could she commit to anything when a monster’s blood ran in her veins and whispered to her to take her lover’s neck?

Aveon’s hard body pressed against hers, and his lips left a trail of cold fire down her throat. Desire rushed through her. Her small breasts grew heavy, and a wild ache rose within her. Goddess, she was starved for this and hadn’t even known it. He groaned and flicked his tongue against her skin. The sound fluttered through her.

Vampire, vampire, she chanted over in her mind, clawing after sanity. Goddess, she had a vampire’s lips against her neck, and all she wanted to do was bare it to him.

He’ll bite you. She tried to push him away, but couldn’t budge him. When had he gotten so damn strong?

He raised his head and stared into her eyes. “Don’t deny this, Luna. You know this is right between us,” he said, and Goddess damn it, she did. It felt like coming home. Long forgotten emotions and needs roiled within her.

No! This was not happening. Not now. Not ever. Who did this leech think he was? How dare he make her feel such things?

“I said let-me-go.” Her voice dropped to a low growl, and her eyes narrowed.

“Never.” His eyes burned with a purely male intent, promising wicked things. Possession was stark in his gaze, and he was looking at her as if he’d never seen anything more beautiful. Even as her mind rebelled, her body responded. To be looked at like that. For some unknown reason this crazy vampire had decided she was his.

“Why? I can’t Quicken you. I thought you all wanted that,” she said. She thought a look of confusion flickered across his gaze, but was gone before she could be sure.

“I did.” He brushed his fingertips down her cheekbone. Had anyone ever touched her so adoringly, looked at her with such passion? Mesmerizing. She couldn’t tear her eyes away.

Aveon leaned closer, slanting his mouth to cover hers. The shock of his lips. So cold, yet she felt delicious heat. A small moan escaped her when he gently brushed his tongue against her lips. Another lap and the breath left her lungs. Without meaning to, she parted her lips, deepening the kiss, his lips cold silk on hers.

Can’t fight this.

She fell, her mind spinning and her body raging in reaction. The ground seemed to shift beneath her feet, and the world spun away. He delved his tongue into her mouth, and after a moment of hesitation she met him. For just one moment all that existed was his mouth on hers, his tongue teasing gently. Her hand snaking up his chest and grasping the back of his neck, she held him to her.
